On Chickens

Several years ago I started keeping chickens. I find them fascinating in a car wreck sort of way. They are good to eat (I don't name my chickens.) and lay eggs which are much better than the supermarket variety. They are also handy for fertilizing and cleaning up the garden. Mine live in the garden year round. During the summer they stay in a coop that I can move from one garden bed to another. In the winter when the weather is fine they have the run of most of the garden. It is amazing how a flock of half a dozen chickens can clean up the garden and have it ready for planting in the spring. All the scratching is good for something.

They are also the most peculiar creatures to watch. They do the strangest things. I find it amazing that they have survived the evolutionary process. If you have ever looked a chicken in the eye you know that they are several eggs short of a dozen. Ordinary chickens only have one thought in their heads, "Can I eat it?". Extraordinary Einstein caliber chickens sometimes wonder "Will it eat me?". Beyond that as near as I can tell everything is pure instinct.

All in all they are a lot of trouble but interesting. Which brings us to the Quest for the Mouseproof Chicken Coop.  Click here.
